Fort Hays was constructed in 1865 as a defense point for settlers crossing the dangerous lands of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes. Until it was closed in 1889, the fort was also used as a major supply depot for other area forts, owing to its location near the railroad. Visitors to the fort can see four buildings from the original fort, view displays of Native American artifacts and learn about the history of the fort that was the temporary home to famous individuals including Buffalo Bill Cody and General Custer. The fort is located a mile west of the Fort Hays State University campus.
